Our Vision for the Mathematics Department at Ladybridge High School

Welcome to the Mathematics department where we aim to prepare pupils with the fundamental skills required in modern society. We will strive to make mathematics a fun and inspiring subject at Ladybridge.  We pride ourselves on developing young people not just mathematically but providing them with the skills to communicate and reason effectively.  These skills are essential to their success in mathematics and in life.

• We will thrive on the challenge of raising performance at ALL levels.  We will inspire young people to achieve great things as they travel through a tunnel of excellence within our department.  This tunnel is built through innovation, quality learning, quality relationships, quality standards and quality leadership at ALL levels’

Our goal is to provide a first class education in mathematics to all who attend Ladybridge.  Pupils develop a respect for maths and understand the challenges and rigor involved in achieving high grades in mathematics.

Mathematics offers pupils the opportunity to prove to colleges and future employers that pupils are capable of discipline, perseverance, taking risks, problem solving and communicating effectively.

Independent enquirers

This is an essential part of mathematics and pupils will be trained in developing these skills within their lessons.  They will grow to develop a discipline and rigor for mathematics within a safe and enjoyable environment.

Creative thinkers

Mathematics is a creative subject that is not built on methodologies.  We aim to develop innovation and creativity when solving problems in mathematics, opening pupil’s minds to alternative solutions.

Team Workers

The co-operative Learning strategy is employed in all classrooms in the mathematics department.  We promote discussion and teamwork skills that help pupils to accelerate their understanding of mathematical topics.  It also helps pupils develop essential social and communication skills if they are to be successful in their post school years.

Self managers

Pupils are set regular deadlines in and out of the classroom.  Pupils are expected to manage their time and behavior appropriately in order to hit deadlines and give themselves the best chance of learning.  We will incorporate self management skills into our lessons by asking pupils to work under time constraints to give them experience of pressured situations that reflect and examination.  We will provide guidance and resources to support your child in managing
themselves.

Effective participators

We pride ourselves on providing a range of learning experiences for our pupils that allow all pupils to engage in mathematics.  We will switch their brains on and activate their learning.

Reflective learners

Pupils review, evaluate and modify work as they progress through each Key Stage.  It is important pupils begin to understand the power of self assessment in mathematics.  Their mistakes can be the keys to their success and we will help our pupils to identify and think about their mistakes.

Year 7 study mathematics for 3 50 minute lessons a week.  Year 8 and 9 pupils study mathematics 4 50 minute lessons a week and Year 10 and Year 11 study 3 50 minute lessons a week.
