EAL
School & Department Overview
At Ladybridge High 47% of our students are now from an ethnic minority background (29% in 2004). 36% have EAL with half of these being INAs within the last 3 years and in the school we currently have 49 different first languages.
Our Mission Statement is:
- To meet the needs of EAL students so that they can overcome barriers to learning and achievement.
- To narrow achievement gaps by careful targeting of lower achieving ethnic minority groups.
- To provide access to education for International new arrivals by effective assessment, induction and integration into the mainstream.
- To support EAL students with emotional, social and cultural needs.
- To involve parents in their children’s learning.
We provide:
- Induction for International new arrivals
- A programme of early stages of English language experience
- Ongoing in/out of class support across the curriculum
- Year10/Year11 EAL withdrawal groups to reduce options and provide more personalised learning for International new arrivals
- Year8/Year9 English withdrawal groups for focused/appropriate English teaching within level 2/3
- Help/advice for other staff
- Mentoring Project, e.g. BLT/in house Pakistani heritage mentoring
- Focused support for underachieving groups e.g. MEAP, project for Somali/Pakistani heritage
- Nurturing/pastoral support for any EAL students but especially International new arrivals
- Liaison with other agencies, e.g.
- Starting Point
- Travellers Service
- BEMAS
- Connexions/College
- Somali Community Centre
- MFL exams in first language
- Attendance issues and home visits
- Data collection/compilation reporting
- Baseline data – English reports to parents for withdrawal groups
- Parents/community involvement
